Player ratings as Cerny drop Gers to second place

Rangers got back to winning ways with a comfortable 1-0 win over Dundee on Saturday afternoon.

After a demoralization and controversial defeat on penalties to arch-rivals Celtic in last weekend's League Cup final, Rangers had to turn their attention back to the realm of top-flight football.

Philippe Clement revealed that Hamdpen's loss had “hurt a lot for everyone at the club” and a sense of deflation permeated an underwhelming opening 45 minutes. The Gers racked up double figures in shots and had more than 80% possession but only forced veteran Dundee goalkeeper Trevor Carson into two straight saves.

Whatever Clement said in the first half paid off quickly. Vaclav Cerny, the striker at the epicenter of a penalty-free decision that caused a showdown between the Rangers and the Scottish Football Association, legally kicked the visitors ahead a minute after the restart.

Driving away from Dundee's scrambling back line, the Czech forward rounded Carson and slotted the ball between a rapidly narrowing corner.

Rangers Didn't add to Cerny's opener, despite creating promising openings for James Tavernier and two golden chances for Hamza Igamane. However, the win moved the Gers back into second place, leapfrogging an Aberdeen side that quickly ran out of steam after a torrid start to the campaign.

Clement insisted before the game that “things are going in the right direction”. Three more points in the Premiership bolstered the manager's case, but the eight-point gap at the top of the league Celtic underlines how far Rangers have to go.
