Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher reviews the controversial moments from the weekend's Scottish Premiership action, including a red for Motherwell's Dan Casey, plus incidents involving Kilmarnock, St Mirren, Ross County, Hearts, St Johnstone, Rangers and Celtic.
Motherwell 1-1 Kilmarnock
INCIDENT: Now on to the red card controversy in the Scottish Premiership where John McGinn – whose brother plays for Motherwell – called it the worst decision he had ever seen.
Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell says he is fed up with referees after Dan Casey was sent off by referee Chris Graham for a scuffle with Kilmarnock's Danny Armstrong, despite being instructed by VAR to review the decision.
DERMOT SAYS: I don't think it's a red card at all. I think the referee believes he grabbed him by the neck. VAR quite rightly warned him to go and check.
But what they didn't do well is that they showed it in slow motion and show the end so that you can't see that he caught him halfway up the chest. It looks like he grabbed his neck, I don't think so.
INCIDENT: Kilmarnock were furious that Graham didn't award them a penalty after Andy Halliday caught Brad Lyons on the leg. Were they right to be angry? Was it a penalty?
DERMOT SAYS: I think this is a really interesting decision because if you watch the replay, the player (Halliday) plays the ball, he comes first and then the defender gets on his feet to bring him down. It's certainly not a foul in any other way.
STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: I'm confused. This is a case of VAR letting them down and not intervening. The entire process of that game will be reviewed by Martin Atkinson. I'm sure he'll say there's a lot of work to do.
Ross County 1-2 St Mirren
INCIDENT: St Mirren's Scott Tanser was not pleased to be sent off by referee Ian Snedden for a second yellow card after he jumped Ross County's Aidan Denholm. Is he only to blame here?
DERMOT SAYS: As a judge, you don't judge in advance, but you prepare. The first touch is difficult and his (Tanser's) instinct is to get the ball back quickly. He stretched and caught the player. He already had a yellow card so he has to go.
INCIDENT: St Mirren's Richard Taylor tackles Ross County's Eamonn Brophy inside the box.
DERMOT SAYS: I don't see how it can be anything other than punishment. The reason I say that is because if you look at the striker, he will immediately head the ball. He obviously nailed it and that has an impact on the decision and the outcome.
WARNOCK SAYS: It's so awkward isn't it, like what are you doing? You have to be aware of everything around you. You can't just sneak up on someone's back.
SUE SMITH SAYS: He knows himself, wraps himself in him, and then comes down as if he himself is injured.
INCIDENT: Then two from St Mirren. This for handball about Josh Reid – but tell us why this will never be given?
DERMOT SAYS: The player is on the floor and cannot move out of the way of the ball. His hands are on the ground and the ball hits his hand. As long as his hand is grounded, it won't be a penalty.
INCIDENT: How about this – big draws as Killian Phillips meets Jordan White. St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson was adamant it was a penalty and was booked for his appeals. Should it have been given?
DERMOT SAYS: The referee has the best view. If it was given, I don't think VAR would have overturned it. But the referee looks right at it, so for whatever reason he thinks it's not a penalty.
Rangers 1-0 Dundee
INCIDENT: Rangers' goal against Dundee survived a firm VAR call for offside. Did they make the right decision?
DERMOT SAYS: When you look at this, it's a great call that they didn't flag earlier. If so, the move is broken so that's a good place. That's a really good job by the officials.
Dundee United 0-0 Celtic
INCIDENT: There were several penalties from Celtic fans for handballing Glenn Middleton. Something in this?
DERMOT SAYS: I don't think there's any chance. His hands are down by his side. There's nothing he can do about it. I watched a lot of this game and the wind was terrible. You have to keep the conditions in mind as a referee, but you can't let the players take advantage of them.
Hearts 2-1 St Johnstone
INCIDENT: Hearts had a goal disallowed for offside against St Johnstone after a VAR review. Explain this to any doubts, Dermot?
DERMOT SAYS: I think this is a great spot because the player has gone from a partial offside position to going back to the side to take the ball. It is the most difficult for the assistant to spot.
INCIDENT: Then an appeal against St Johnstone's handball penalty to James Penrice was called after VAR recommended referee John Beaton go to the monitor. Was this a good intervention or a harsh call?
DERMOT SAYS: I think it's a tough call. He hits him on the elbow, but his hand is already there and he runs away. Does he see the ball? They were very consistent in the Scottish league. If it happens next week, they will also give a penalty. It was hard and fast. It's been happening since the first week until now, and it's going to happen until the end of the season.
