Tiger Woods believes the ceiling his son Charlie can impress in golf is “limitless” after he birdied a hole-in-one in their second finish at the PNC Championship.
The former world No. 1 played alongside his 15-year-old son in the 36-hole scramble event, where only former major winners, or The Players, are eligible to compete alongside a member of their family.
Tim Woods held a share of the lead after a first-round 59 at the Ritz-Carlton Club in Florida, while hopes of victory soared when Charlie birdied the first hole of his career on a thrilling final day.
The pair carded a 15-under 57 to finish tied atop the leaderboard at 28 under, along with Team Langer – consisting of two-time Masters winner Bernhard Langer and his son Jason, who clinched victory with a dramatic eagle on the first tee-off hole.
Woods previously described the event as his “fifth major”, his fifth consecutive appearance at the tournament, with the 48-year-old proud of his son's progress.
“He (Charlie) has gotten better in every aspect of the game,” Woods said. “It's a commitment to training and developing as a player. I think most of us forget that he's only 15 years old.
“I know he's been doing it in front of the media for a long time, but considering he's only 15, I think it's incredible what he's been able to achieve so far, and the ceiling he has is limitless.”
Woods' historic ace on the final day
Charlie's first match in one came with a stunning tee shot on the par-three fourth, where he nailed a 7-iron to about six feet of the hole before watching it roll into the cup.
“It was the thrill of a lifetime to be able to have that moment with Charlie, make my first hole in one, Sam (his daughter) on the bag, just our family and friends,” Woods added. “That's what this event is about. It's about bonding and family.
“To have that experience together, I know we didn't win, but the fact is we competed. No one was really wrong there. We had to earn it and that's what you want to have. Hats off to the Langers – they played brilliantly.”
When he got his first ace, Woods Jnr said: “It was great to have my dad there. That was so much fun. It was just a perfect 7-iron, little cut. Of course I never saw it go in. So shit, but that's okay.”
What next for Tiger?
Tiger's appearance was his first at any event since missing the cut at the Open in July and undergoing back surgery in September to ease the spasms and pains he has been experiencing throughout the 2024 season, and Woods was unable to compete at the Hero World Challenge- in earlier this month.
“I'm nowhere near competitive shape,” Woods admitted to the PGA Tour website. “I'm a great sparring partner. We made a great team this week, and that's all the joy.”
He later added, “I've done a few things here and there. I can hit a few shots here and there. It's training, every day, doing little things and continuing to improve, and I'll continue to improve going into next year.”
Woods has committed to playing in the inaugural TGL when it kicks off in January, representing 'Juniper Links' in an indoor golf league that blends virtual and real-time golf, although he is yet to confirm his full schedule for 2025.
