Manchester United's 2-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers made all the more disappointing by captain Bruno Fernandes' red card early in the second half.
Fernandes picked up a second yellow card just two minutes after the interval and made the long walk down the tunnel to third time this seasonhaving previously been dismissed against Tottenham Hotspur and Porto.
Crucially, the first red card against Tottenham was subsequently overturned united appealed the decision, so it does not count against Fernandes' disciplinary record.
Because that sending-off against Wolves was Fernandes' first official red card in the Premier League this year, he will only serve a one-match suspension, rather than the two-match ban that would follow a second red card.
It means Fernandes will have to watch from the sidelines as United take on Newcastle United on Monday 30 December, with the Magpies looking to continue their pursuit of a top-four place.
Fernandes is not the only United star to be suspended for that game as manager Ruben Amorim will also be without Manuel Ugarte, who was shown his fifth yellow card of the season against Wolves and must now serve his suspension a match. .
With Mason Mount also injured, Amorim has limited options in midfield and is likely to turn to Casemiro to partner Kobbie Mainoo against Newcastle. Christian Eriksen and 20-year-old Toby Collyer are the only other natural midfielders in Amorim's squad.
