In a bold call that has sparked debate in cricket circles, India's legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar he has said that he is a fast runner Mohammed Siraj is likely to be left out of the Indian squad for the upcoming fifth Test against Australia. Following a series of performances that Gavaskar considers difficult, this advice comes at a critical time in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Mohammed Siraj's disappointing numbers
Siraj has been one of India's fastest bowlers on the tour, but his recent outings have not been satisfactory. In the Melbourne Test, he conceded 122 at an economy rate of 5.30 in just 23 overs, showing a lack of control and efficiency with the new ball. Over the course of the season, his 4.07 earned run percentage has been the highest among the leadoff hitters in both leagues, indicating the need to refine his approach. He has taken 13 wickets so far with the help of just one 4-fer.
Sunil Gavaskar explains why Siraj should be dropped from the fifth Test
Gavaskar's assessment was divided after the second day of the 4th Test in Melbourne, where Siraj performed brilliantly. The former captain emphasized the importance of direct communication with the players. Stating that Siraj should be told why he is being left out, Gavaskar encouraged a culture of transparency that he believes is essential for growth and change. He was not advocating for Siraj's traditional retirement but rather to demolish him on merit.
“I think Siraj, maybe, needs a little rest. In the sense, I'm not saying rest, he needs to be told that he's left in the team because of poor performance. There have to be situations where you can't beat the bush. You have to be aggressively forward and say 'look, your job It's not up to scratch. When you start talking about 'rest', players get the wrong idea. They don't need to raise their game.” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
“But I think Siraj needs to be told 'look, you're not playing the ball as expected on the pitches which have been helpful'. It's something that needs to be told. If you want to change two. Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana to support Jasprit Bumrah. Either way,” he added.
