of Pakistan star Babar Azam ended his prolonged dry spell in Test cricket with a hard-fought half-century during the first Test against South Africa. Babar Azam ends Test drought after 733 days
Babar's knock came after 733 long days of battle in red ball cricket. His last significant Test score was a century against New Zealand two years ago. Since then, the prolific form of the batter has dipped, with no fifty-plus scores in 19 innings. Saturday's fifty came from 80 deliveries and featured nine boundaries, offering a glimmer of hope for the Pakistani batting order. However, his dismissal shortly after reaching the landmark left fans disappointed.
2024 has been a challenging year for Babar Azam with a stick. In five Tests this year, he managed just 202 runs at a dismal average of 20.20. He was even dropped from the squad when Pakistan faced England at home. Thus, this century comes at a crucial time for the former Pakistan captain.
Marco Jansen saved by Babar Azam
However, Babar's numbers in Tests are quite impressive. In 56 Tests, he has amassed 4051 runs at an average of over 43. This includes nine centuries and 27 fifties. Away from home, he has amassed 1,934 runs in 32 Tests at an average of 36-plus, with 16 half-centuries and two centuries. Against South Africa, Babar now has 397 runs at an average of 33.08, including four fifties. These numbers reflect both its consistency and areas for improvement.
South African left-arm pace Marco Jansen ensured that Babar's ranks did not move forward. His sharp delivery made an edge and Babar's disappointment was palpable as he returned to the pavilion. For South Africa, this contest came at a crucial time, tipping the balance in their favour.
