Australia's defender and reserve defender Josh Inglis ruled out with a slight calf strain. He picked up the injury on the field during the fourth Test at the MCG, meaning he will miss the final Test against India in Sydney. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the news and said they will carefully manage Inglis' recovery with an eye on the upcoming Test tour in Sri Lanka.
Inglis was of Australia only backup goal in the squad on day three after being released for all-rounder Beau Webster Big Bash League (BBL) tasks. Sharing outfield responsibilities with Sean Abbott, Inglis took the strain. CA announced his official release from the squad, although he was unlikely to play in Sydney barring an injury in the playing XI.
Inglis' BBL participation in jeopardy
The injury is a significant setback for Perth Scorchers, Inglis' BBL team. He had already featured in two matches against the Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades, played between the third and fourth Tests. However, with just 22 days to recover before Australia's Test squad departs for the UAE pre-tournament camp, his immediate availability for the BBL remains doubtful.
CA's priority is to ensure Inglis is fit for the two-Test series in Sri Lanka, starting January 29. Given his ability against spin, Inglis is a strong candidate to make his Test debut as a specialist bowler in Galle. The timing of his recovery will be closely monitored to maximize his fitness.
Notice of pending replacement
CA is yet to announce a replacement batsman for the Sydney Test. Nathan McSweeney could return to the squad due to his versatility despite being dropped ahead of the Boxing Day Test. Webster, although released to the BBL, remains on standby and available if required.
Australia's fast bowling reserves remain strong with Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott staying with the squad. Concerns over Mitchell Starc's back discomfort on day three were eased after the batsman declared himself fit to bowl. However, he was not needed as Australia quickly wrapped up India's first innings.
