Daryl Jacob retires from the saddle with no regrets after bowing out in “perfect fashion” following Saturday's 31st and final Grade One victory.
The 41-year-old, who has been plagued by injuries in recent months, announced that he was looking for a 25-year career after guiding Impaire Et Passe to success in the Faugheen Novice Chase in Limerick.
It was fitting that Jacob would end up in the double green of owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, who have retained his services for the past 11 years.
“It was the perfect way to end my career,” Jacob said Sky Sports Racing. “Everyone knew this was going to be my last year but I really wanted to come back from injury in time for Christmas.
“I don't think I could have bettered that ride on Impaire Et Passe – a Grade 1 winner for Simon and Isaac. That's the one thing I wanted this year.
“Going back to Leopardstown, where I had so many great days, felt right. I wanted to go out on my terms and do it my way.”
Jacob's career includes triumphs on the biggest stages, including the Grand National with Neptune Collonges in 2012, as well as numerous victories aboard the likes of Bristol De Mai and Sceau Royal.
Asked about the best horse he has ridden, Jacob said: “I've had so many great days so it's hard to pick one, but for CV the Grand National is right up there.
“L'Ami Serge winning the French Champion Hurdle was a very tough thing and Bristol De Mai winning his second Betfair Chase when he beat Might Bite and Native River was a big moment.
“I had 31 grade one winners, I won an Irish Hennessy, an English Hennessy on Diamond Harry, Reve De Sivola won a long walk hurdle, Sceau Royal won 15 races for me, a wonderful Top Notch. I was very lucky.
“I never thought I would achieve what I have. I can honestly say I've never been the most natural jockey, as everyone knows I'm quite tall, but one thing I've done is put my heart and soul into it.
“I emptied the tank. I have absolutely no regrets, I gave everything to the game.
“When you work hard and put your mind to it, I'm pretty confident you can achieve anything you want.”
