Sky Sports' Gary Neville reacted with dismay to Manchester United's poor performance in their 2-0 defeat by Newcastle. This is what Neville said live on co-commentary…
Sky Sports Schoolboy Neville was commentating at Old Trafford and witnessed another abhorrent display from his former side.
Here's how the Man Utd legend reacted as the match unfolded in front of him…
Before the game…
“You can't go from your current place to an incredible performance. I understood that completely.
“But what I would say is that you still need to see bits and pieces of things that you like, and this idea that Ruben Amorim has. I know they've struggled to get minutes on the practice field, but you'd want to think from game to game that they would actually start to sort of fit into a play pattern, and we're not seeing that yet.
“One thing I would say is I think Ruben Amorim might just have to pick 11 and just get on with it.”
If Amorim makes too many changes
“He hasn't agreed with the team yet. Is it time to create stability? The players didn't accept his idea, but how much harder is it if the players don't have a pattern to play together?” “
Were there any positives under Amorim?
“They've been going backwards, but hopefully it's backwards to go forward.
“There is very little picking in terms of positive results in the first few weeks.
“Maybe the most positive thing is that he's seen what those players are really like and we're not getting the bounce that might have made him think they're better than they are.
“I think he thought it was a big deal, but it's a huge deal and he finds that out early when it's his position of power and strength.”
On Manchester United's struggling summer signing
“What surprises me is that when Manchester United signed those three or four players in the summer, I didn't hear anyone say 'Manchester United had a terrible transfer market'.
“I'm shocked at how bad those players were in their early months.
“I already said that this club was a graveyard for players who came with a decent reputation. And it repeats itself.
“I didn't hear anyone say in the summer when Yoro, De Ligt, Ugarte, Zirkzee joined that United didn't sign half-decent players. The problem is that when you saw them here in the red shirt then Manchester United looked like a worse team.”
At Isak's early opening…
“Casemiro and (Christian) Eriksen don't have the legs to move.
“Manchester United have had three centre-halves… there is a gap but one of them has to pick up the danger man.
“Manchester United's confidence has been damaged.
“Watch out for Martinez. He has to be aggressive next to him. It has to be better.
“Maguire looks behind him and can't believe he's unchallenged. Martinez HAS to go toe-to-toe.”
When Isak missed a one-on-one shortly after…
“What was that?!
“He must be shooting past (Andre) Onana into the far corner.
“But (Lisandro) Martinez's defense was terrible.”
When Joelinton made it 2-0…
“It's almost a copy.
“Casemiro and Eriksen shouldn't be playing together in the Premier League. It's that easy.”
As the first half progressed…
“Newcastle take on Manchester United. This is a smash.”
About the failed team selection
“When you saw Manchester United in the starting XI you had to think that it would be very difficult for this team to play well.
“The two wing-backs are not very good in the attacking part of the pitch. The two central midfielders can't run. The back three don't have the legs. (Joshua) Zirkzee doesn't have the balance (Rasmus) Hojlund.
“You really only have Amado (Diallo) who you think could do something.
On the superiority of Newcastle
“Newcastle are having the time of their lives there. There should be three or four.
“They were absolutely horrible. You're watching the worst pound-for-pound team in the country.
“(Diogo) Dalot is very willing and successful, but his options with the ability he has as a full-back are limited.
“I look at (Ruben) Amorim and he has to think, 'what am I looking at?'
“There are only three who can say they were good under Amorim: Dalot, (Noussair) Mazraoui and Amad.”
When Zirkzee was sent off in the 33rd minute…
“I have to feel sorry for him.
“He was basically cheered on by his fans and it's brutal.
“I haven't seen that too many times at Old Trafford.
“It's brutal for him. I've no doubt he's back for the Lucozade.”
About value for money…
“They were all absolutely awful. You're looking at the worst pound-for-pound team in the country.”
Second half thoughts…
“I am surprised that there were no changes at halftime. I thought it would be.
“The amount of changes Manchester United make to their back five in a game and from game to game is incredible.
“It was a fight for Casemiro and a fight for Martinez.
“Since the introduction of (Kobbi) Mainoo, it has been better for Manchester United.
“The first half hour was uncomfortable, as you will see.”
While Man Utd struggled to score…
“There was a graphic that Jamie Carragher showed before the game that showed that when Manchester United played Mazraoui and Dalot, more defensive wing-backs, they didn't score in open play.
“Which is terrible and it's happening again before our eyes.”
About man of the match Isak…
“I'm stating the obvious, but Isak is a hell of a player.
“The game was won by this man in the first 20 minutes.”
About what now for Manchester United
“Troubling times for Manchester United and Amorim.
“He knew it was a big deal, but I think it's far bigger than he ever imagined.”
