Next month's Carabao Cup semi-final will see on-field referees make an announcement about the outcome of a VAR review, a first for English football.
Decisions reviewed by the referee on the sidelines or factual matters such as accidental handballs by the goal scorer or offside will be announced to the crowd for clear understanding.
While in-stadium announcements are common in the NFL and rugby union, they have not previously been used in English football. The system was tested at last year's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
“The new pilot is part of PGMOL's wider commitment to transparency and embracing technological advances for the benefit of match officials and fans,” the EFL statement said.
“This latest pilot has the support of the EFL and an early partnership with PGMOL in 2018 to trial VAR in EFL matches ahead of its introduction to the Premier League.”
Arsenal will play Newcastle in the first leg of the semi-final on January 7. In the first leg, Tottenham Hotspur will play Liverpool in the other semi-final on January 8.
