Gavaskar's bold take on Kohli and Rohi's future in Team India

India's Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign has been far from ideal. They are currently trailing 1-2 in the series with the chances of WTC final qualification looking very slim. After the loss at the MCG, India's legendary goal Sunil Gavaskar has crashed the old players Virat Kohli AND Rohit Sharma. He has openly questioned their future with Team India.

A disappointing performance below

Both Kohli and Rohit entered the series with high expectations. However, neither managed to step up, leaving fans and selectors disappointed. Rohit's leadership and Kohli's batting, the cornerstones of the team, have come under fire. Gavaskar's assessment was blunt and unvarnished.

Talking about Kohli's struggles, Gavaskar pointed to a recurring technical glitch. “The foot is not going towards the ball. It's going straight to the field,” he explained in an interview with India Today. “When that happens, you're forced to look for deliveries outside, increasing the risk of errors.”

This observation strikes at the heart of Kohli's repeated dismissals in the series. Despite trying hard, Kohli has not been able to adapt to the issue.

Voters in the spotlight

Gavaskar did not stop at technical criticism. He has also returned to the limelight of India selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, prompting them to make tough calls on the team's senior players.

Rohit Sharma to retire from Test Cricket After Australia Series: Reports

“The contributions from the top order have been below expectations,” Gavaskar said. “If the top order doesn't work, the lower order can't be blamed for the team's failures.”

Rohit, already facing whispers of retirement, finds himself in a particularly precarious position. Sunil Gavaskar has made it clear that seniors should not be guaranteed a place in the Indian Team based on their reputation alone.

A call for accountability

India's efforts at AustraliaGavaskar believes, stemmed largely from the poor performance of his experienced batsmen. “The high command has not done its job. That is why India finds itself in this situation,” he said.

He also emphasized the responsibility that senior players carry at crucial stages. “All they had to do was bat during the day and take the fight to Sydney,” Gavaskar said.
