The fifth test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground began on an emotional note. Australian opener Usman Khawaja wore a black armband as a touching tribute to Melissa, the late wife of former South African cricketer Ashwell Prince. Melissa passed away recently after a battle with cancer and Khawaja's gesture was a heartfelt way to honor her memory.
Khawaja's gesture was a poignant reminder of the bonds cricket weaves across borders, with players supporting each other through personal tragedies.
A tribute to Melissa Prince
The death of Melissa Prince left the cricketing fraternity in mourning. Ashwell Prince, who represented South Africa in 66 Tests and 52 ODIs, shared the shocking news on Instagram, accompanied by an emotional tribute to his wife.
“It was extremely difficult to see you endure so much pain in the last months of your life. But we choose to remember you the way we knew you. A gem, one of the rare kind that touched people's hearts in a special way everywhere you went,” Prince wrote.
His words reflected deep grief and love, capturing the deep impact Melissa had on those around her. “We miss you mom and we can hardly believe that you are gone. But you have left a mark on our hearts that can never be erased. Happy New Year my love. Rest in peace up there, your boys will always love you!”
Khawaja's short stay at the crease
after INDIA were bowled out for just 185 in their first innings, Usman Khawaja stepped up to open for Australia late on day 1. But his time at the crease didn't last long. Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah sent a sharp delivery that caught Khawaja's bat, sending him back to the pavilion after scoring just 2 runs and 9 balls.
While his batting performance was quiet, Khawaja's tribute made a stronger impact. That black armband said more than runs or wickets.
