Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has spoken about the severity of Jasprit Bumrah's injury following the fifth Test against Australia in the BGT 2024-25 series. Gautam Gambhir said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will provide an update on Jasprit Bumrah's injury at the appropriate time.
India were without Bumrah in Australia's second innings due to injury. The fast bowler bowled just 10 overs in the first innings before being dropped. India lost the match by six wickets, with Australia securing a 3–1 series win. This marked Australia's first Test series win against India since the 2014–15 season.
Medical team working on Jasprit Bumrah – Gautam Gambhir
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gautam Gambhir was asked about the extent of Jasprit Bumrah's injury. He said they don't have a clear update at that time as the medical team is still working on Bumrah. Gambhir assured that the update will be provided when available.
“Gautam, just about Bumrah, do we know how bad his injury is?” asked the reporter.
“Not at the moment, honestly. Because obviously the medical team is working on him. So we will give you the right update at the right time,” Gambhir replied.
Jasprit Bumrah finished as the leader of the series
Bumrah suffered a back spasm while bowling in the first innings and was unable to bowl in the second innings. However, he finished as the series leader, taking 32 wickets at an average of 13.06 and a strike rate of 28.38, including three five-wicket hauls.
With India needing to defend a target of 162 runs to level the series, Bumrah's absence was deeply felt. Without Bumrah, India's bowling attack failed to pose a threat to the Australian batsmen. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna tried to apply pressure but the target was chased down in just 27 overs.
He led the attack very well – Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir praised Jasprit Bumrah for his outstanding performance in the series. He stated that Bumrah led the bowling attack well, bowling plenty of overs and taking wickets when the team needed him. Gambhir also acknowledged the contributions of other bowlers, including Mohammed Siraj.
“Absolutely outstanding. I think I can't say more than that. I think he led the attack very well. He bowled a lot of overs. And whenever he came to bowl, he did a fabulous job. He took wickets He did his best,” Gambhir said.
“But then he was helped a lot from the other end as well. He was helped by Mohammed Siraj. He was helped by some of the guys as well. Like Harsh Shetrana in the first two Test matches.”
“Then Akash Deep. Finally, yes, you will always see wickets and runs. There were plenty of other contributions as well. But from Jasprit Bumrah's point of view, he had a phenomenal run.”
