Scottie Scheffler pulled out of another tournament – the American Express – after suffering a freak hand injury while preparing Christmas dinner.
World No. 1 Scheffler remains recovering from surgery after cutting his hand on broken glass while preparing food on Christmas Day.
The injury forced Scheffler to withdraw from the January 2-5 Sentry event in Hawaii and, after consulting with his medical team, the 28-year-old has confirmed he will not play at La Quinta Country Club between January 13-19.
“After consulting with my medical team, I have made the decision to withdraw from next week's American Express Tournament to give my injury more time to heal,” Scheffler wrote on Instagram.
Scheffler remained hopeful of starting his 2025 season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which runs from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2, although no definitive date for his return has been given.
Scheffler continued, “I still hope to start the 2025 season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am.”
How did Scheffler get injured?
Scheffler was sidelined at the end of 2024 for three to four weeks after he was forced to undergo surgery on a hand he cut on broken glass.
“On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from broken glass,” Scheffler's manager Blake Smith said in a statement.
“Small shards of glass were left in the palm which required surgery. He was told he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks.”

Scheffler said he's “almost lived his life this year” after securing the FedExCup victory, capping off a “nutty” season — both on and off the golf course.
The 28-year-old became the first player to win The Players, The Masters and the FedExCup in the same season.
Scheffler closed out a four-shot victory at the season-ending Tour Championship, where he never relinquished the top spot over four days and became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2007 to record seven or more wins in a year on the PGA Tour.
After winning the Masters for the second time in three years, he was arrested and charged ahead of his second round at the PGA Championship in May.
The charges were later dropped as Scheffler won the next two Signature Events – the Memorial Tournament and the Travelers Championship – before securing gold for Team USA at the Paris Olympics and winning the PGA Tour's FedExCup for the first time in his career.
