The Sentry: Hideki Matsuyama sets PGA Tour record with 72-hole 35-under to win in Hawaii | Golf News

Hideki Matsuyama finished with a PGA Tour record 72 holes of 35 under to win The Sentry in Hawaii by three shots of Collin Morikawa.

The Japanese surpassed the mark of 34 off Cameron Smith's mark to win the same event in 2022 as he claimed his 11th PGA Tour title and third in less than a year.

Matsuyama shot an eight-under 65 at Kapalua on Sunday, and his bogey on the par-four seventh was the only shot he missed over his final 59 holes as he captured the $3.6 million top prize.

The Sentry: Final Leaderboard

  • -35 Hideki Matsuyama
  • -32 Collin Morikawa
  • -29 Sungjae Im
  • -25 Jonathan Vegas
  • -24 Thomas Detry, Corey Conners, Ludvig Åberg

After an eight-foot birdie putt on 18 secured a new PGA Tour record, the 32-year-old said: “I'm so happy it went in.”

Matsuyama's 35th hole birdie or better – he also holed out 107 yards for eagle at the second in his final round – broke Smith's record three years ago and Sungjae Ima's 2024 at the same spot in 2024.

Morikawa, who started the final round one shot behind Matsuyama, carded a six-under 67 and his title hopes vanished when he three-putted consecutively on five and six to make par and bogey.

The American said of Matsuyama, who will now move up to fifth in the world rankings: “He just never let up today. I just knew I had to be on top of everything, and I just let a few slip on that front nine.

“I played a good back nine, but to win on this course, in these conditions, you have to have it in 72 (holes). And I had it in 65.”

I finished with a 65 and tied for third at 29 under par, while Taylor Pendrith secured the albatross – the first on the Plantation course since the PGA Tour's season opener moved to Kapalua in 1999 – at the par five when he holed out from 200 yards.

The Canadian, who finished tied for 13th at 22 under, said: “As soon as I hit it, I knew it was going to be really good (but) I didn't expect it to go in.

“I didn't see it go in, but the fans up by the green went crazy so, yeah, that was a really nice bonus.”
