Virgil van Dijk has admitted Liverpool were lucky to escape Sunday's meeting with Manchester United with a draw.
Despite going into the game as overwhelming favourites, Liverpool were beaten for large parts of the enthralling 2-2 draw and we were lucky to see Harry Maguire's shot go over the crossbar in the seventh minute of added time.
It was a missed opportunity Liverpool to climb further into the Premier League title race, with Arsenal and Chelsea having dropped points earlier in the weekend, and Van Dijk admitted the Reds just need to take comfort in getting a point of their own.
“It could have been a lot worse if we were absolutely honest with ourselves,” Van Dijk reflected after the game.
“They had a great chance at the end that could have been a lot worse than where we are now. I'm obviously disappointed with the points drop at home, but it is what it is and we have to keep going and we will.
“We found 2-1 and then it's about trying to manage the game and keep the ball for more than three and four passes. We lost the ball too easily at times and then we were more open than we should have been .We “are not perfect, we are still learning and we have to learn from this too.”
Van Dijk continued to deny suggestions that the pre-match narratives surrounding the two clubs ultimately saw Liverpool underestimate united.
“It's all the media,” he said. “Conversation in the media.
“It's not about us. We prepared for a very difficult game as we saw today. We didn't think anything of it.”
