S. Badrinath questions Shubman Gill’s selection in the Indian team; spews fuming remarks over his batting woes



Several players in the Indian cricket team have come under intense scrutiny following their defeat in Australia, which marked the end of a decade-long reign in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Some of the main points of criticism are Shubman Gillwhose constant struggle with bats was seen as one of the low indicators. Badrinath, speaking to Star Sports Tamilhe pointed out several key aspects of Gill's batting and spoke highly of the youngster suggesting that talent may not be the only reason behind Gill's continued selection in the team.

“If this was Shubman Gill from Tamil Nadu, he would have been brought down,” the former Indian cricketer said. Badrinath also pointed out the incident below from Gill in Australia and the lack of purpose from the youngster. Badrinath, who has played for the Indian team in seven ODIs, two Tests and one T20I, also expressed his desire for Gill to tire the bowlers and make the ball age even if the runs did not come. But nothing happened in the whole series.

“Don't go out there and say, 'This is how I play.' I will stand and save. Whatever you do, at that moment, you try to do. This list, I did not get from Shubman. Even in the field, he was poor. He couldn't be in a slip and point. What does he contribute to the team?” Badrinath asked.

The 25-year-old is expected to feature in the Indian team Champions Trophy 2025 but his consecutive failure to score big runs has made his selection difficult.

Gill had Border Threats-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The young top batsman scored 93 runs in 5 innings in the entire series with 31 runs in Adelaide. The danger of Gill's batting is evident from the Australian pacer Mitchell Starc and It's Webster who played only one Test match in Sydney scored more runs in the series than Gill.

The terrific display from Gill is not limited to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. His performance in the longest format of the game has always been lamented. Gill's performance in the home series against new Zealand it's not up to par. Apart from a knock of 90 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Gill scored only a handful of runs against the Blackcaps.
