IND vs ENG: Former India coach picks his squad for the T20I series against England

India's Five T20I matches expected by England will begin on January 22 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The series comes at a critical time when both teams are gearing up for a major tournament, moving from Test cricket to the fast-paced T20. India won South Africa in the away T20I series with a 3-1 edge last year.

India's batting in the T20I series against England

Sanjay Bangarthe former Indian batting coach, gave insights into India's playing XI in an interview on Star Sports' Follow the Blues. In particular, Yashasvi Jaiswalwho was part of the recently concluded Test squad Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25was named as a top-order batsman, missing out on the first XI.

Bangar's top picks include Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samsonwhile the central positions have Rinku Singh and Shivam Dubey. With a little experience and talent, this series promises to test the depth of India's T20 arsenal against a formidable English side.

“For me, the top four is the same, in which Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav along with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Number 5 and number 6 – Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube. For me, the top batting reserve should be Yashasvi Jaiswal. I want him to play colors all three, at least to compete in all three categories,” Bangar said.

Difficulty in choosing: Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul ?

One of the biggest debates surrounding the Indian team revolves around the wicketkeeper-batter position, and Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul emerging as leaders. Bangar confirmed that the decision could depend on whether the team prioritizes four strikers or a long-term plan. Pant, who is close to leading India in the 2024 T20 World Cup, brings a competitive edge and a dynamic middle-order.

On the other hand, Rahul, though he has not been in T20Is since T20 World Cup 2022he remains a campaigner with a credible reputation. Bangar suggested that Pant may have limitations from a future perspective but acknowledged Rahul's versatility. He also hinted at a scenario where Pant could replace the injured Samson or Jaiswal could enter the senior squad. Selection emphasizes the balancing act required to match the current landscape with future possibilities.

“Wicketkeeper, it's tough, it's tough between Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul,” added the former India coach. If the need is to hit the top four, then yes, Rishabh Pant, or KL Rahul. It's tough but if you have to have a long-term look, then Rishabh could be the man. If Sanju Samson is not fit, then you can remove (control) and play Yashasvi at the top, leave one left-hander, and bring in Rishabh Pant to bat at No. 5. That's Rishabh Pant,” the 52-year-old added.
