Younis Khan will guide Afghanistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy


Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has been appointed as a mentor to Afghanistan cricket team ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This marks Younis' second stint with the team. He previously served as their hitting coach in 2022.

Official confirmation from ACB

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the news on Wednesday.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, ACB spokesperson Sayeed Naseem Sadat shared details about the appointment. “ACB has appointed experienced former Pakistan player Younis Khan as mentor for Champions Trophy 2025. He will join the team before the event starts in Pakistan,” confirmed Sadat.

The Champions Trophy will begin on February 19. Afghanistan's first match is against South Africa on February 21 in Karachi.

A legendary career

Younis Khan's cricketing credentials are nothing short of legendary. During a remarkable career, Younis Khan scored 10,099 runs in 118 Test matches. His highest score was 313 against Sri Lanka. Younis also has more than 7200 runs in ODIs.

At the top of his batting achievements, Younis holds a special place PakistanCricket history for leading the team in their first T20 World Cup victory in 2009. He remains one of the most respected figures in the world of cricket.

Training stints and experience

Since retiring from international cricket, Younis has taken up various coaching roles. He briefly served as batting coach for the Pakistan national team, imparting his wisdom to the next generation of players.

His coaching journey also includes stints with Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and a coaching role with Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. Younus has a great understanding of Pakistan's pitches. Afghanistan have recently performed very well in ICC events. With Younus at the helm, Afghanistan would be hoping to make it to the knockout stages.
