Rodrigo Bentancur gives update after injury scare against Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has revealed he is “all good” after requiring extensive treatment during the first half of Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final win over Liverpool.

Bentancur crumpled to the ground at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium within ten minutes of opening. The Uruguay international was not in contact with any other players and appeared to hit his head on the ground while taking a corner kick. The midfielder was left prone and face down, causing serious concern for both sets of players.

After nearly ten minutes of treatment on the field, Bentancur left the field to a standing ovation.

Spurs went on to secure one 1-0 victory in his absence, but fans had even more reason to celebrate when Bentancur posted a positive update on social media after the match. “All good boys!” the message, which was above a smiling photo of the player and his partner, read. “Thanks for the messages, congratulations on the victory guys.”

Tottenham Boss Ange Postecoglou was asked about the incident after the match. “It was worrying and (a head injury) is always worrying, but we think at this stage he will be fine,” the manager stressed. “He was conscious on the way to the dressing room.”

When pushed into the type of injury Bentancur had suffered, Postecoglou could only offer redundancy: “I don't want to speculate because I don't really know either. All I know is that he was conscious when he left.

“Obviously it was some kind of head injury, but he was conscious when he came off the field. And he was taken to the hospital for observation. But I'm not really clear how it happened.

“If I don't get a doctor here, I'm not going to speculate because it's just not fair to the people around him. There were concerns from the players there, so obviously something was going on.”

Spurs travel to the home of fifth-tier Tamworth in FA Cup third round on Sunday lunchtime ahead of a north London derby at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium next Wednesday. While Bentancur is unlikely to play in either of those games, it remains to be seen whether he will be available for the semi-final second leg against Liverpool at Anfield in the first week of February.
