Aston Martin has appointed Andy Cowell as team principal after demoting Mike Krack from the role in an organizational restructuring.
Former Mercedes engine guru Cowell joined the team as group chief executive in October last year, but has now also become team principal.
Krack, who has been Aston Martin team principal since 2022, will become chief trackside officer as part of changes that split their aerodynamics, engineering and performance departments into separate track and campus operations.
Aston Martin, which has moved to a new campus at Silverstone in 2023, says the changes are designed for “leadership clarity and as part of a move to a flatter structure” and to help achieve “its mission to become a championship-winning outfit”.
“I've spent the last three months understanding and assessing our performance, and I've been incredibly impressed by the commitment, dedication and hard work of this team,” said Cowell, the engine mastermind who helped Mercedes win eight consecutive constructors' championships. titles from 2014 to 2021.
“With the completion of the AMR Technology Campus and our transition in 2026 to a full works team, alongside our strategic partners Honda and Aramco, we are well on our way to becoming a championship-winning team.
“These organizational changes are a natural evolution of the multi-year plans we've been planning to make, and I'm incredibly excited about the future.”
The announcement also confirmed that Enrico Cardile will take over the position of chief technical officer he signed up for last July, with the Italian having just been allowed to take up the job after serving garden leave following his departure from Ferrari.
Aston Martin's announcement made no mention of legendary designer Adrian Newey, who joins the team as managing technical partner in March after leaving Red Bull.
A statement from the team said: “The team based at the AMR Technology Campus will be led by the team's new technical director, Enrico Cardile, with the team now able to focus 100 percent of their time on the competitive ingenuity challenge of creating a new race Enrico will oversee the architecture, design and construction of the new race cars .
Tom McCullough, who previously led trackside operations as director of performance, will remain in “group leadership roles, where he will play a key role in expanding the team's wider range of racing categories”.
The changes come after Aston Martin stepped back in 2024 following an encouraging 2023 campaign. While both campaigns finished fifth in the Constructors' Championship, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll's combined points dropped from 280 to 94.
Aston Martin has made no secret of its hopes of becoming title challengers, especially when a new generation of engines and design rules are introduced to the sport in 2026.
The team has secured a deal to have their engines produced by Red Bull's current supplier Honda, switching from Mercedes.
Billionaire team owner Lawrence Stroll, whose son Lance drives for the team alongside two-time world champion Alonso, has spared no expense in his attempts to create a title-winning outfit.
