Newcastle United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup by coming from behind to beat Bromley 3-1 at St James' Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Magpies were riding high heading into this cup tie and the Toon Army must have thought they would enjoy a quiet afternoon. Newcastle's stellar form has seen them move up to fifth in the table Premier League tableand they recently took a giant step towards the Carabao Cup final by beating Arsenal 2-0 away from home.
However, Eddie Howe's side were quickly brought back down to earth by the League 2 side. The form of the manager's heavy rotation was surprising in the opening stages. Cameron Congreve achieved what the Gunners had failed to do in midweek, breaking through Martin Dubravka's defense with a well-timed effort from distance.
It didn't take long Premier League team to restore parity, however, with Lewis Miley, who has barely featured this season after returning from a long-term injury, hitting Newcastle's equalizer at home.
The hosts took full control after that and should have taken the lead through William Osula soon after Miley's equaliser. NewcastleThe first half superiority was no surprise as they enjoyed 86% of the ball, but Bromley were stubborn enough to head into the half time break at 1-1.
There was no fuss from Howe at the start of the second half with Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes entering the fray, and the former coolly dispatched a penalty from 12 yards to give Newcastle their first lead in the cup tie three minutes after restart.
Osula, in a rare outing after arriving in the summer, added a third for the hosts with a finish – his first for the club. Newcastle's second-half composure allowed Howe to add 17-year-old Trevan Sanusi to proceedings for his competitive debut and the Magpies held on to their two-goal lead without fuss in the closing stages.
