Shakib Al Hasan was suspended from bowling after failing the bowling action test

The star all-rounder of Bangladesh Shakib Al Hasan has failed yet again in a re-evaluation of his bowling action. The latest test, conducted at the Sri Ramachandra Center for Sports Science in Chennai, confirmed that Shakib's action does not comply with the legal limits set by International Cricket Council (ICC). As a result, his existing bowling suspension remains in place.

Shakib's suspension comes as a huge blow to Bangladesh, especially with the Champions Trophy just a month away. While the 37-year-old is eligible to play as a specialist player, his absence as a shooter leaves a significant void in the team's plans.

Suspension details

of Bangladesh Cricket The Board (BCB) issued a statement addressing Shakib's situation.

“The player's existing suspension from bowling in international cricket following the initial independent assessment at Loughborough University in the UK also remains in place. A successful re-assessment is required for the bowling suspension to be lifted,” the statement said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Shakib's bowling action first came under scrutiny in September last year during a county championship match between Surrey and Somerset. The umpires reported his action, prompting the all-rounder to undergo testing.

Failed Tests and a bowling ban

Shakib underwent his first bowling action assessment at Loughborough University in the UK, but he failed to meet the required standards. Consequently, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) banned him from bowling in all competitions organized by the board.

The ICC extended the ban to all domestic and international competitions run by its member boards. This decision has kept Shakib out of action as a footballer in both formats of the game.

Despite his ongoing suspension, Shakib tried to clear his name through the re-evaluation process in Chennai. However, his failure to pass the test means he remains banned from bowling.

Impact on Bangladesh's Champions Trophy campaign

Shakib's ongoing suspension is a massive setback for the Bangladesh champions' campaign. The veteran all-rounder has been a crucial part of the team's success over the years, both with the bat and the ball.

Without Shakib's bowling services, Bangladesh will have to rely heavily on other bowling options. Team management will likely make adjustments to compensate for his absence in attack.

Shakib's controversial year

2024 was a turbulent year for Shakib, marked by controversy both on and off the field. His involvement as an MP in Bangladesh's Awami League government drew criticism, particularly during widespread protests in July and August.

Shakib's political commitments affected his availability for the national team. He missed several key series, including the farewell Test match against South Africa at Mirpur. Protests for and against his role in politics were organized outside Dhaka, adding to the tension.

The all-rounder also missed Bangladesh's ODI series against Afghanistan and West Indies, further limiting his cricket appearances.
