An early goal from Eberechi Eze made the difference as Crystal Palace beat League One Stockport 1-0 in their FA Cup third round tie at Selhurst Park.
Oliver Glasner made five changes to the Palace side that drew with Chelsea on January 4 but still fielded a strong starting line-up, including Eze.
The England representative shot from Palace already in the fourth minute, and the hosts dominated possession, although both sides had their chances to make a difference in the result.
The League 1 visitors stayed in it and indeed produced more shots on goal than their Premier League opponents, who held on to secure a victory perhaps less comfortable than they imagined.
The opener was facilitated by a Daichi Kamada pass that was initially blocked by Odin Bailey, but the ball fell to Eze and he fired low past visiting keeper Corey Addai.
Stockport came close to equalizing when Isaac Olaofe cut in Kyle Wootton on the edge of the Eagles' 18-yard box but was denied by Marco Guehi's late touch.
American goalkeeper Matt Turner – making only his second Palace start since signing on loan from Nottingham Forest – was called into action for the first time by Callum Camps, whose low effort was comfortably saved.
The visitors had another chance shortly after the half-hour mark, Wootton heading Olaofe, whose own header was saved by Turner.
Eze tried again, this time heading towards the back post, where Addai took the England international's effort.
Ibou Touray then looked to set up Wootton, who understood but nodded.
Palace's threat continued to come primarily from Eze, who flashed across goal where Daniel Munoz was also unable to connect.
Palace were back on the front foot after the break when Eddie Nketiah's early shot went wide of the right-hand post and Jefferson Lerma nodded home Kamada's corner just after the hour mark.
The Eagles breathed a sigh of relief when Olaofe was ready for a moment of miscommunication between their defenders, stealing the ball but unable to find the finishing touch as Turner dove to make the save.
Stockport held out as Palace tried to claw back what was still an uncomfortably narrow lead.
Guehi found Nketiah with a clever move, but the former Arsenal striker, surging forward, could only nod away.
Lerma missed a golden chance to make it two when he rounded Addai late on but somehow fired over the bar.
Palas almost scored a second goal with the final pass of the game in six minutes of stoppage time.
Eze slipped on to replace Justin Devenny, but Addai was on hand for his initial effort and the Northern Ireland international sent his second into the side netting.
Glasner: Chalobah wants to stay at Palace
The boss of Crystal Palace Spokesman found that a “contract issue” was prevented. Trevoh Chalobah since playing against Stockport and the player wants to stay with Palace.
Chalobah's absence has fueled rumors that the Chelsea player could soon return to his parent club.
“I know (Chalobah) wants (to stay). I know we want him, and that's why I think yes. We still have (a lot of time) to enter the transfer window. As always, anything can happen,” Glasner said.
“But when you ask me, I want us to stay together with this team. I know Trevoh wants to stay, I know Marc (Guehi) wants to stay.”
