India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is all set to feature for Mumbai in the match against Jammu & Kashmir in the second leg of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25. The match will be played at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC, Mumbai from January 23
Jaiswal was recently not named in India's T20I squad for the five-match T20I series against England, with the selectors opting to give him “rest” after the hectic Test series against Australia.
However, the youngster instead opted to play the Ranji Trophy, which is a big boost or the defending champions. Mumbai are currently third in Group A with three wins, one loss and one draw in five matches so far.
Yashasvi Jaiswal to play Ranji Trophy for Mumbai
A Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) source has confirmed Yashasvi Jaiswal's availability for the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir. The squad is yet to be picked by the chairman of selectors Sanjay Patil and will be announced soon.
“He (Yashasvi Jaiswal) has been asked to report for practice in Mumbai tomorrow. He is available for the January 23 match and will be picked for that match, the source was quoted as saying by TOI.
With teenager Ayush Mhatre in excellent form with the bat, Mumbai will have a solid opening combination. Angkrish Raghuvanshi looks set to make way for Jaiswal from their last Ranji game after Prithvi Shaw was dropped from the squad earlier.
Yashasvi Jaiswal in BGT 2024-25
Yashasvi Jaiswal had a good tour of Australia, although he couldn't get India over the line. Jaiswal played all five Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and became India's best player of the series.
In five Tests, Jaiswal scored 391 runs at an average of 43.44 with one hundred and two fifties. He was also the series leading scorer behind Travis Head. The 23-year-old played a key role in India's victory in Perth with a superb second-innings hundred.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a fantastic start to his Test career. He scored 1798 runs in 19 Tests at an average of 52.88 with 4 hundreds and 10 fifties to his name. At a young age, he has been India's best batsman in the red-ball format since debut.
He is in line to be selected in India's 2025 Champions Trophy squad despite not having played an ODI so far. He could be selected as India's third opener behind captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.
Rohit Sharma is training with Mumbai
Meanwhile, India captain Rohit Sharma practiced for nearly 45 minutes with the Mumbai Ranji team. Rohit took part in a few tosses and even took part in the match simulation where he faced the best bowlers in Mumbai.
However, Rohit has not confirmed his participation in the Ranji Trophy game against Jammu & Kashmir as he is still not sure about it. Rohit will be playing in the upcoming Champions trophy and doesn't want to get used to red ball cricket.
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit scored just 31 runs in three Tests at an average of 6.20. The Indian captain even pulled out of the last Test in Sydney due to his poor form with the bat.
