Transfer of Naomi Girma: Chelsea Women Agree Record Fee For San Diego Wave Defender | Football News

Chelsea Women have agreed a world record deal with the San Diego Wave for defender Naomi Girma.

A deal worth around £890,000 ($1.1 million) was reached between the two clubs, breaking the current record fee of £695,000 ($860,000) when Racheal Kundananji moved to Bay FC from Madrid CFF.

The centre-back is expected to undergo a medical in London later this week and become Blues manager Sonia Bompastor's first January signing at the club.

The transfer comes after Chelsea signed Levante striker Mayra Ramirez in January last year for a British record fee of £384,000, plus up to £42,600 in add-ons.

Girma reported for the first day of pre-season training in San Diego on Tuesday, but it appears it could be her last session at the club, managed by former Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall.

US international Girma made 44 appearances for her national team and won gold with Team USA at the 2024 Olympics.

The 24-year-old was also named the best soccer player in the USA for 2023.

Chelsea are at the top of the Super League table, seven points clear of Arsenal, and are through to the knockout stages of the Women's Champions League.
