Winterburn says the new striker will be a 'catalyst'.

Arsenal's signing of a new striker could be a catalyst for success, says former Gunners left-back Nigel Winterburn.

Mikel Arteta's side have finished second to Manchester City in the Premier League in each of the last two seasons and are currently in second place, just six points behind leaders Liverpool.

Ever since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the club last season, along with winger Bukayo Saka, they have struggled to score outside the box.

With Saka injured, Winterburn knows it won't be easy to sign a proven goalscorer, but he thinks it will make all the difference.

101 Talking Through Great Goals. William Hill Vegas Winterburn said: “Arsenal and centre-forwards are always debated.

“My personal belief is that if everyone is fit, an outside goal scorer will make Arsenal very dangerous.

“If a Premier League striker can secure 25 goals, that will be a boost. With this new team, we haven't won any trophies.

“We are very close with a new striker and it will scare a lot of teams.”

The Gunners have scored 43 goals in the Premier League this season, seven less than Liverpool and one behind Chelsea and Manchester City.

Kai Havertz is their leading scorer in eight league games and Aubameyang is the last man to reach 20 goals at Ligue in 2019-20.

Winterburn said: “You can go out and buy a striker and still not win the championship. We had strikers before, but the team was not strong enough.

“But now the team is stronger. The problem this season is injuries and moving players. I'm struggling with the system. “
