Alex Scott reveals how Arsenal tried to recruit Naomi Girma

Last week without the transfer record for a women's player was destroyed when JoNt Naomi Girma defender ended $ 1.1 million (890,000 £) Pass to Chelsea by San Diego Wave.

The 24-year-old was one of the most sought after players this month as Arsenal and Lyon were also appreciated with interest. However it was Chelsea who won the race to sign girma in front of their local and European rivals to significantly strengthen their chances of winning WSL title and Champions League.

Girma was discovered by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday ahead of their League meeting with Arsenal. The Sonia Bommaster side took one over their rivals with a close 1-0 win to extend their superiority at the top of the table, but it seems Chelsea also came out on top of the field.

The Girma announcement before the meeting against Arsenal would have rubbed the salt in the wounds, and former striker Alex Scott revealed at half the time she was sent to persuade the defender to move to Arsenal in place.

“I'm just looking for a friend here, because as I mentioned, there were a number of teams behind you,” Scott told BBC Sport on Sunday. “Arsenal sent me together in the directors box to try and help you be a red but it didn't come out. So I just need some reactions.”

Girma replied with a laugh: “You were amazing!”

Unfortunately for Scott – and Arsenal – it seems that Girma's mind was already composed as she described the decision to join Chelsea as a 'easy choice' in her first interview with Club website.

“I'm very happy and really excited I'm here,” Girma said. “It doesn't feel true.

“There are many things about Chelsea that made me want to come here – culture, winning mentality, staff and players. It is a high environment to learn and grow.

“For now, that's what I'm looking to do. It was a simple choice for me. ”
