Newcastle vs Wolves: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Newcastle United welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to St James' Park in the Premier League on Wednesday night on the back of an eight-game winning streak.

The Magpies were made to work harder than expected at the weekend as they fell behind League Two openers Bromley in the third round of the FA Cup. Lewis Miley's brace settled Geordie's nerves before they pulled away in the second half.

Sunday's win came after they beat Arsenal 2-0 away from home in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final – a triumph to complete five straight victories in Premier League. Their remarkable rise in form has left them with legitimate aspirations for a return to the Champions League.

Wolves' objectives are not as lucrative during the second half of the season, with Premier League survival their main objective.

They also advanced to the fourth round of FA Cup after Vitor Pereira named a strong starting line-up at Bristol City. Pereira has quickly turned Wolves into a much more focused side, but they were beaten for the first time under his tutelage by Nottingham Forest last week.

Their position remains precarious heading into the drop zone, with Ipswich's recent run of form leaving them level on points with the West Midlanders.

Here it is 90 minutes guide to Newcastle against the Wolves.

Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak's absence at the weekend was forced due to a thigh injury, but Eddie Howe hopes his superstar will be fit for the visit of Wolves.

Sven Botman, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock are all knocks, but the trio are not expected to miss Wednesday's game.

Anthony Gordon was brought on for the second half against Bromley with Harvey Barnes nursing a muscle injury and the former Leicester winger set for a spell on the sidelines. Barnes joins Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson, Emil Krafth and Nick Pope on the treatment table.

Newcastle predicted formation against Wolves (4-3-3): Dubravka; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Isaac, Gordon.

Matheus Cunha

Wolves will be boosted by the return of striker Matheus Cunha, who served his second two-match ban at Ashton Gate. The Brazilian will return to Pereira's XI and will work alongside top striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

There could be a Premier League debut for January arrival Emmanuel Agbadou at the heart of Wolves' defence, but he will not be partnered by Craig Dawson or Toti Gomes, who are both injured.

Nelson Semedo is also likely to miss out with a thigh injury, while Sasa Kalajdzic, Boubacar Traore, Enso Gonzalez and Yerson Mosquera are all sidelined with long-term knee problems.

Wolves predicted formation against Newcastle (3-4-2-1): This; Doherty, Agbadou, Bueno; R. Gomes, Andre, J. Gomes, Ait-Nouri; Cunha, Hwang; Larsen

Cunha's return is a huge boost for the visitors, who missed his ability in front of goal against Forest last Monday. Wolves have emerged as a fearless outfit under Pereira, and they are unlikely to arrive at St James' Park with the intention of picking up a point.

However, an enterprising Wolves will be welcomed by the hosts, who are scoring for fun at the moment. If they are given space to catch, Howe's formidable front three will benefit. Their midfield continues to perform at an incredibly high level and Newcastle's defense is reaching a level comparable to their 2022/23 greatness.

This has the makings of a back-and-forth high-scoring contest, and the Magpies should continue their excellent run.

Prediction: Newcastle 3-1 Wolves
