Jasprit Bumrah ordered on bed rest as BCCI blocks his return

The latest update on Jasprit Bumrah has raised serious concerns about his availability for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He sustained back spasm after being over bowled in Australia during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

Jasprit Bumrah is currently under medical observation after being advised to take bed rest at home. After a grueling Test tour in Australia, the Indian pace spearhead returned home last week, but his condition remains alarming due to back swelling.

Jasprit Bumrah under medical observation, participation in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 remains uncertain

Sources revealed that Bumrah is expected to report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. But it is unclear when he will visit the Center of Excellence (CoE), jeopardizing his participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

However, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to visit the Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru next week, but that entirely depends on his progress. Sources also revealed that medical experts have asked Bumrah to rest to allow the swelling to subside so that they can determine the next steps for his recovery and treatment.

For now, the focus remains on making sure the Indian's back muscles fully recover and the swelling subsides before any further decisions are made on his fitness and future plans. However, if there is only swelling, then Bumrah could be available for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Jasprit Bumrah may go to CoE next week: Report

A source close to the development was quoted by the Times of India as saying, “Bumrah might go to the CoE next week, but there is no fixed date yet at the moment. He was advised to rest in bed at home to help the muscles recover and the swelling to subside. Once this is done, the future course of action will be determined.”

As Bumrah is currently struggling with back swelling, Team India's number one pacer will not be rushed back into action. Given his history of back problems, the BCCI has been warned not to rush him back onto the cricket field.

The exact cause of the swelling is said to be still unclear, but if it is worse than expected, his recovery could take longer and he could miss the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai.

BCCI faces a tough decision as Jasprit Bumrah struggles with back swelling

The source added: “Bed rest doesn't sound good. I'm hoping it's not a bulging disc or a higher grade muscle bulge. The approach has to be similar to him – wrap him in cotton wool and keep the talent like him.”

So, now the Indian cricket team management and selectors are hoping that Jasprit Bumrah's back problem should be limited to swelling only as a disc related problem could further delay his return. With a busy calendar ahead, including Champions Trophy 2025, IPL 2025 and England's tour of India, managing the Indian pacer's recovery carefully and patiently is crucial.

India are yet to finalize their provisional squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as the national selectors are awaiting the medical team's report before calling for Bumrah's inclusion in the 15-member squad. They hope to get a clear picture in the next couple of days.
