Manchester United legend Denis Law has died aged 84, his family have announced.
Law, who has two statues dedicated to him at Old Trafford – one of which is the Trinity United statue that also features Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best – announced in December 2021 that he was suffering from dementia.
“It is with heavy hearts that we tell you that our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought an uphill battle but is finally at peace now,” the family said in a statement. “We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to his welfare and care, in the past and many more recently.
“We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made a difference.”
Law spent 11 years at Old Trafford, scoring 237 goals in 404 appearances for the club and was capped 55 times by Scotland, scoring 30 goals.
He played a major role in United's revival after the 1958 Munich air disaster, winning the old First Division twice, the European Cup and the FA Cup, and was awarded the coveted award. Ballon d'Or trophy in 1964.
“Everyone in Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the king of Stretford End, who has passed away at the age of 84,” a Red Devils statement said. “He will always be celebrated as one of the club's greatest and most loved players.
“The ultimate goalscorer, his flair, spirit and love of the game made him the hero of a generation. Our deepest condolences go out to Dennis' family and many friends. His memory will live on forever.”
Law also played for United's neighborhood rivals, Manchester Cityas well as Huddersfield Town and Torino.
