Indian National Cricket Team Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar spoke about the reason behind naming Shubman Gill as the vice-captain of the team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He said that they always keep an eye on the future when making decisions . .
The Indian national cricket team unveiled its squad for the ICC Champions Trophy on Saturday (January 18). The focus was on the team's vice-captain and it was none other than Gill, who was given the role of Rohit Sharma's deputy for the tournament.
Shubman Gill was added to the management group after the T20 World Cup 2024, captained the Zimbabwe team and was then named vice-captain ahead of the Sri Lanka series.
Gill was added to the management group after the T20 World Cup 2024. He was asked to lead the team in the T20I series against the Zimbabwe national cricket team. And then he was appointed vice-captain of the white-ball teams for the tour of Sri Lanka.
Few reports claim that Jasprit Bumrah will be named the vice-captain of the team in ICC Champions Trophy 2025, especially after his heroics with the ball and as captain in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. But that was not the case.
The selectors have opted to back Shubman Gill in the role and this gives a hint that the batsman may continue to take over from Rohit Sharma once the batsman calls time on his career. Gill, without a doubt, was one of the best talents in the country.
I won't look into it too much, but a lot of the feedback for these decisions comes from the dressing room – Ajit Agarkar on Shubman Gill's appointment as vice-captain
While talking about Gill's name as vice-captain, he said that the young batsman was vice-captain in Sri Lanka and they took the feedback from the dressing room in making the decision. Speaking to reporters, he explained:
“Gill was vice-captain in Sri Lanka as well,” Agarkar said. “You always want to be looking for leaders. I won't get into it too much, but a lot of the feedback for these decisions comes from the dressing room.”
Shubman Gill has developed as one of the best openers for the team in a short span of time, he has 2328 runs in 47 innings
Shubman Gill has undoubtedly developed as one of the best openers for the team in a short span of time. He scored 2328 One Day International (ODI) runs in 47 innings at an average of 58.20. He will be extremely important for his team in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as he bats at the top.
Shubman Gill, of late, has come under the scanner for his inconsistency. ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be a great opportunity for him to answer all his critics in style and help his team lift the title where India will play all their games in UAE.
