Manchester United have opened talks with Lecce over a deal mark Versatile left-back Patrick Dorgu, according to reports.
The Red Devils' miserable season took a turn for the worse on Sunday as they suffered their sixth Premier League home defeat of the season. Brighton & Hove Albion ran out comfortable 3-1 winners at Old Trafford, handing Amorim his fourth defeat in front of the United faithful since taking over from Erik ten Hag.
United's defensive issues have been well documented, as has Amorim's preference for playing a wing-back system. After losing to Brightonthe Portuguese insisted “I'm not going to change the way I see the game” before warning that his players and the club's supporters will “suffer” as he has “a way of doing things”.
One player Amorim had hoped to sign was Paris Saint-Germain's Nuno Mendes, having worked with the turbocharged Portuguese full-back at Sporting CP. But now it seems likely that the 22-year-old will do just that extends the contract with the French capitalending any prospect of a Manchester reunion.
Athletics report that United's attention has shifted to Dorgu i Lece and that discussions have begun for a possible transfer.
The 20-year-old, who was capped four times by Denmark, only signed a new four-year contract with Lecce in October, but his impressive performances in Serie A have caught the eye of United scouts.
Dorgu has started 19 of Lecce's 21 matches in Serie A this season, appearing not only on the left wing, but also on the right and on the right wing. It's those attacking tendencies that may have caught the eye of Amorim, who has used the ever-improving Amad as a front-footed right-back at times.
unitedThe urgent need to sign a new left-back has been highlighted by Diogo Dalot's inconsistent performances in a role that is largely unfamiliar to him. The Portuguese international is a right-back by trade but has featured increasingly on the opposite flank as Luke Shaw continues to struggle with various injury problems.
Noussair Mazraoui is also capable of playing on the left and has played on a few occasions, but he too is much stronger on the right and has been preferred in that role to allow Amad to flourish further forward.
