Mohammad Shami ruled out of remaining Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests due to left knee swelling. The BCCI emphasized controlled recovery for his Test comeback.
Shami sidelined with knee injury
Muhammad Shami is excluded from Border Trophy-Gavaskar due to swelling in the right knee. Shami would not take part in the remaining two Test matches against Australia. BCCI has confirmed the decision after Shami's fitness. Due to the bowling load in the last few innings, his left knee got swollen. His recovery is closely monitored by BCCI's center of excellence.
“Based on the current medical assessment, BCCI The medical team has determined that his knee requires more time for controlled exposure to the loads of bowling. Consequently, he has not been deemed fit to be considered for the remaining two Tests of the Frontier-Gavaskar Trophy,” the BCCI said in a statement.
The issue came up during Shami's participation in domestic cricket. He has bowled for 43 overs in the Ranji Trophy and 9 overs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Despite extra bowling sessions to regain match fitness, his left knee showed swelling, prompting caution.
Increased workload
The BCCI has explained that Shami's workload has increased significantly following his prolonged recovery from the previous injury. The medical staff has extended his rest and controlled exposure to the intensity of the match.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma had earlier sought updates from the National Cricket Academy regarding Shami's progress. The BCCI emphasized that Shami should build strength gradually, ensuring there is no hindrance in his fitness for future matches.
Border Trophy-Gavaskar
The Test series between India and Australia is tied 1-1. Both the teams have won single matches and the third Test recently played in Brisbane was declared a draw. Shami's presence was much needed for the Indian team. As far as the performance of the Indian players is concerned it was not up to par in the pink ball test in Adelaide. Jasprit Bumrah was single handedly carrying the pace attack. The efforts of Mohammad Siraj and Harshit Rana were no match for Bumrah's bowling skills and India were struggling to take the wickets of the Australian batsmen. And it led to massive victory by Australia in the second Test.
India and Australia are gearing up for the Boxing Day Test, which will begin on December 26. It will be interesting to see how the Indian pacers will dominate the Aussie batting and secure their place in the WTC finals.
