Nathan Ellis, Chennai Super Kings recruit for IPL 2025 took one of the biggest catches in BBL 14. The stunning catch came during BBL clash between Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers.
A catch that defied belief
In the 10th over, the Strikers were chasing their target and Matthew Short was attacking hard against the Hurricanes. Positioned in the middle of the match, Ellis had a different strategy. Waqar Salamkheil delivered a high and slow ball. Short moved forward to hit him hard but misjudged his move. The ball went up and Ellis initially misjudged its trajectory, causing him to run backwards.
However, he remained focused on the ball. As he went down, Ellis jumped up and caught him with both hands as he fell to the ground. The crowd erupted in amazement at the spectacular catch, which gave the Hurricanes a vital lead and swung the momentum of the game in their favour.
Hobart's commanding total sets the scene
Earlier in the match, Hobart posted a commanding total of 214/5, with Ben McDermott leading the charge. McDermott's dazzling 68 off 34 balls included three sixes and he broke his bat after hitting his second maximum. After stepping it up, McDermott continued to hit hard, helping Hobart post its only 200-plus total of the season and the fourth-highest total in team history. Despite losing early wickets – Mitchell Owen (8) and Caleb Jewell (22) – the Hurricanes were propelled by McDermott and Tim David (33), who added 88 runs in the last six overs.
The Strikers, led by Overton's 2-27, hit back with some key breakthroughs but Hobart's impressive batting and explosive batting made it difficult for Adelaide to catch up.
The forwards' big push comes up short
In reply, the Strikers got off to a flying start, with captain Matt Short (52) and D'Arcy Short (41) putting on an incredible 76-run partnership. Ollie Pope added 39, and Overton contributed a quick-fire 30 not out. However, the Strikers could not keep up with the increased run rate.
When Matt Short reached his 14th BBL half-century with a massive six, it looked as if the Strikers could mount an exciting chase. But then came Ellis' incredible catch that sent Short back to the dressing room and swung the game in Hobart's favour.
A series of amazing efforts in the field
The Strikers' chase continued to unravel as Tim David took a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Ross (8), and Ollie Pope fell comfortably to a reverse ramp that was shot by Chris Jordan. It seemed like the Hurricanes' fielding and bowling was always one step ahead.
The final blow came when Overton tried to reduce the damage with a series of boundaries, but it wasn't enough. The batsmen finished on 203/6, falling short by 11 runs.
