Newcastle piled on the misery for Ruben Amorim and Manchester United as they condemned the Red Devils to a fourth straight defeat on Monday night.
The signs were ominous from the start as Newcastle immediately settled into the contest and took no more than three minutes to open the scoring. Alexander Isak scored for the sixth successive Premier League game as he headed Lewis Hall unchallenged.
The visitors' midfield has developed into perhaps the best in the division and United's old stalwart had no answer. Newcastle were completely dominant and Isak missed a great chance to double their lead before Joelinton finally did on 19 minutes.
Joshua Zirkzee's withdrawal after the 30-minute mark was a damning indictment of United's woeful display (and Amorim's strange team selection), but the hosts had some flashes towards the end of the first half. Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro spurned good chances to get the Red Devils back in the game from nothing.
There was more of a lull in the second period as United finally got some ground in the contest and had more of a look at Martin Dubravka's goal. Harry Maguire hit the post and Matthijs de Ligt was blocked in the same sequence before substitute Leny Yoro headed just wide from Christian Eriksen's corner.
Despite the build-up, Newcastle were able to keep the Red Devils at arm's length and they were able to hold on with relative comfort for a rare league win at Old Trafford – just their third since 1972.
Chelsea defeat at Ipswich it means Eddie Howe's side are just three points clear of the fourth-placed Blues.
