The New Year Test between India and Australia began on January 3 at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). It is a do-or-die encounter for Team India as Australia have already taken a 2-1 lead in the ongoing 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Well, the pitch and the captain have changed, and even the year, but Virat Kohli's old problems remain the same as the former Indian captain once again left one and all disappointed with his batting in the ongoing fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney.
Virat Kohli's off-stump woes resurface in Sydney, fans call for retirement
On the third ball of the 32nd over, Scott Boland managed to edge India's senior batsman, with Beau Webster caught at third slip. Scott Boland continued to test Kohli outside off-stump and eventually got the upper hand. The Aussie pacer delivered a 135.8kph delivery, just outside off and behind a length, and Virat Kohli, moving away from the crease to counter the movement, hit it lightly.

The ball took the edge and flew to Beau Webster, who dived to his left to take a snap catch. Kohli couldn't soften his hands enough and India are now in serious trouble, four wickets down for just 72. Kohli bowled similar deliveries earlier but couldn't control his intent and lost the wicket, departing for just 17 off. 69 balls at SCG.
After another debacle in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, fans went crazy on Virat Kohli for going out in the same style. Fans started sharing Thank you Virat Kohli posts calling for his retirement from Test cricket. Many called him a bad beater.

He survived the golden duck thanks to the third umpire
It has survived many inside edges
Danced on the field
He went out the same way after eating 69 balls
still playing past 5 years due to a 4 year peak.

He keeps trying to play the offside and ends up throwing his wicket away. He is not done now, he should retire gracefully

It's the only crime I commit every time.
It's Kohli, fumbling the ball from outside off.#ViratKohli #INDvsAUS #HONESTvsIND pic.twitter.com/t35cWhsdsw– Rashtra (@ImrashtRm) January 3, 2025
Virat seems to have embraced the 'nick it' style, with no signs of a fix. It's disappointing to see such a great player fall into the same trap over and over again. #AUSWIND #ViratKohli
