Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has stirred up the cricketing world with his latest prediction. According to Gavaskar, Rohit Sharma may have played his last test match. The Indian captain opted to rest during the fifth Test of the Border Trophy series-Gavaskar vs Australia in Sydney. In his absence, jasprit bumrah took the reins once again, as he had done previously in Perth.
Gavaskar's views on Rohit's future
Speaking during the lunch break on Star Sports, Gavaskar expressed his belief that India can get rid of Rohit in Test cricket. “Well, I think what it probably means is that INDIA do not qualify for the World Test Championship final. “For me, it seems the Melbourne Test would be Rohit Sharma's last game,” he said.
This is India's last Test match in this WTC cycle. Post this, India don't have a test match until June. And if India fail to qualify for the World Test Championship final, Gavaskar advised selectors to invest in young talent. “The new cycle of the World Test Championship will start from d England series, so they will look to have someone available for the 2027 final,” Gavaskar added.
He also hinted that Ajit Agarkarchairman of selectors, may have influenced the decision to rest Rohit for the Sydney Test. “At the end of the day, he is also part of the selection committee,” Gavaskar explained.
Ravi Shastri's take on Rohit's retirement
Former India coach Ravi Shastri echoed similar sentiments. He noted Rohit's age and the need for transition. “If there was a season coming at home, he might have considered continuing, but I think he might just pull the plug at the end of this Test,” Shastri told Star Sports.

Shastri pointed out that Rohit, at the age of 38, may find it difficult to continue at the highest level. “It's not that India don't have youngsters. There are some very, very good players in the wings and it's time to build,” he explained.
India went into the Sydney Test trailing 1-2 in the series, needing a win to keep their World Test Championship hopes alive. With Rohit gone, the focus shifted to Bumrah and the team's ability to handle the pressure in this series decider.
