Tyson Fury's trainer, SugarHill Steward, has revealed that John Fury will NOT be in his corner during Saturday night's rematch against unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.
Pope Fury Out
DAZN reports that Papa Fury, John, will not be in Tyson's corner during the fight. Some people believe there were too many voices in Fury's corner during his bout against unified champion Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) earlier this year on May 18, confusing different voices barking instructions at the beleaguered 'Gypsy King'.
Having John in his corner isn't why Fury lost that fight, but he clearly is a handsome scapegoat that the fans blame why their hero fell short. Fury's fans need someone to blame for their Viking's loss against Usyk, because it would be too painful for them to admit that he just wasn't good enough.
How the fight unfolded would not have mattered if John Fury hadn't helped. The Sugarhill Steward had NO answers for Fury on how to deal with Usyk's superior skills, movement and athleticism.
Steward looked like he had completely lost his mind when things went badly for Gyspy King in the eighth round. After Fury had a bloody beak in the eighth round, SugarHill couldn't help him. Tyson was alone when things went wrong for him, and there was nothing SugarHill could do to help.
From what I've seen, John was the only one who seemed to have some useful advice in the corner that night. If anything, Fury should have ditched his trainer SugarHill and the rest of the henchmen and simply kept Pope for the rematch.
The things SugarHill had taught Fury since joining him in 2019, like lean tactics and rough play, were useless against Usyk. He immediately neutralized that simple-minded approach, leaving Fury with nothing else to fall back on.
