Captain of India Rohit Sharma has strongly expressed his support jasprit bumrah following the pacer's heated altercation with Australian opener Sam Konstas during the ongoing fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Known for his calm demeanor, Bumrah surprised everyone by losing his cool after an exchange with the 19-year-old Australian on the first day.
During the lunch break on the second day, Rohit, speaking to the host broadcasters, termed Konsta's behavior as “nonsense” and supported his players for their stand.
“Our boys are classy, but they won't sit still forever”
Rohit made it clear that while Indian team focuses on playing cricket with class, they will not tolerate unnecessary provocation.
“Our son is as calm as ever. If you keep pointing fingers, then there will be no peace,” Rohit said. “Play cricket, this nonsense doesn't suit you. (Our boys keep calm until they strike. Play cricket, these unnecessary actions do not look good.)”
He further added: “Our boys are classy. We focus more on what our work is. (Our guys are classy. We focus more on our assignments.)”
Heated exchange between Bumrah and Konstas
The incident happened in the penultimate ball of day 1 when Usman Khawaja took his time to settle into the crease, disrupting Bumrah's pace.
However, it was not Khawaja's lateness that caused the tension. Konstas, who was standing at the non-striker's end, made comments that infuriated Bumrah. Pacer, known for his composed personality, could not contain himself and engaged in a verbal altercation.
On the next ball, Bumrah removed Khawaja, forcing an edge to KL Rahul at second error.
The party that followed was intense. Bumrah turned to Constance, letting his emotions show. Virat Kohliwho was placed on the slide cord, also ran towards Consta, adding to the drama.
“Bumrah had every right to react”
Rohit Sharma justified Bumrah's reaction, stating that the team prioritizes professionalism but will not remain silent if provoked.
“It was important to get some wickets at that point to keep Australia under pressure,” explained Rohit. “Our focus is to win games, but if someone crosses the line, our players will respond.”
Kohli's fiery involvement
Known for his passionate approach to the game, Virat Kohli didn't hold back either. After Khawaja's dismissal by Bumrah, Kohli ran towards Konsta in a charged manner, indicating that he was not happy with the youngster's behaviour.

By dismissing Marnus Labuschagne for just 2 runs on Day 2, Bumrah claimed his 32nd wicket of the series, surpassing Bishan Singh Bedi's record for most wickets by an Indian player in a Test series away from home.
Bumrah's leadership has been crucial for India, especially in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. His fiery spell on Day 1 set the tone for the fight against India in the crucial Sydney Test.
