Real Madrid beat Mexican side Pachuca 3-0 on Wednesday to win the first FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
It was an uneventful first half at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, the venue for the 2022 World Cup final, but Madrid took the lead in the 37th minute with their first major chance.
A fine team goal saw the reigning European champions take control of the final, with Vinicius Junior eventually rounding the Pachuca keeper before securing Kylian Mbappe with a light tap.
It took Madrid just eight minutes to double their lead after the restart and put one hand on the trophy. Rodrygo was the man to provide the breathing space, tricking a left-footed shot into the edge of the penalty area before curling a superb finish into the bottom right-hand corner.
CONCACAF champions Pachuca tried to reduce the deficit in the closing stages as they increased their intensity, but Madrid scored a third in the 84th minute to completely wipe out any slim hopes of a podium finish. Lucas Vazquez fell in the penalty area and Vinicius almost converted the subsequent spot kick to secure the Intercontinental Cup for Los Blancos.
