Manchester City have given an update on captain Alex Greenwood after the defender was sidelined earlier this month.
town captain Alex Greenwood was substituted from the ground in the early stages of the side's 2-0 win over St. Polten in the UEFA Women's Champions League.
The club have officially confirmed Greenwood's injury, explaining that the defender had suffered damage to her medial collateral ligament (MCL).
“The defender has since undergone a repair to her MCL and will now return to the City Football Academy to work closely with the Club's medical team,” City announced via a club statement on Thursday morning.
The Cityzens have not given a timetable for Greenwood's return at this stage but will be hoping for a quick turnaround as their injury problems continue to pile up.
Greenwood joins teammates Lauren Hemp and Vivianne Miedema on the sidelines after the star duo underwent their own knee surgeries earlier in the season.
Despite the sad news of Greenwood's injury, England fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery ahead of next summer's Euros in Switzerland.
