Australian T20 veteran Dan Christian has made a surprise return to the Big Bash League (BBL), stepping in to bolster the injury-ravaged Sydney Thunder.
The 41-year-old, who last featured for Sydney Sixers in BBL12, is back in action after a brief break from professional cricket. His return couldn't have come at a better time for the Thunder, who are dealing with a growing list of injuries to key players.
From the role of the coach to the playing XI
Christian had moved into coaching after hanging up his boots, serving as an assistant coach for the Thunder. However, the recent spate of injuries has forced the club to call on its vast experience.
“I made the decision during the off-season that a return to the BBL or another T20 league was never completely off the table for me,” Christian said. “The body feels great and I wanted to make sure I was prepared if an opportunity arose.”
His preparation has been evident, with consistent performances in the NSW Premier Cricket competition for UNSW. While he has not played a professional game since the Sixers' semi-final loss to the Brisbane Heat, his fitness levels have remained intact.
Injury woes hit the Sydney Thunder hard
Sydney Thunder's The injury problems started last week when Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft collided during their match against the Perth Scorchers. The incident left Sams with a concussion and Bancroft with a broken shoulder blade, broken nose and a concussion.
The pair join a growing injury list that already includes Jason Sangha, Nic Maddinson and Tanveer Sangha. Thunder general manager Trent Copeland acknowledged the importance of Christian's return.
“We are very fortunate to have Dan already at the club,” said Copeland. “He's a BBL legend and we have no doubt he's still up to par. We look forward to seeing him jump back into this environment and make an impact.”
Elite company in the 40s club
Christian's return sees him join an exclusive club of players to feature in BBL in their 40s. This list includes names like Brad Hogg, Brad Hodge, Peter Siddle, Fawad Ahmed and the late Shane Warne.
With 409 T20 matches in six countries under his belt, Christian brings unparalleled experience. He has represented Australia 43 times in white-ball cricket and boasts three BBL titles with Brisbane Heat, Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers.
Thunder roster challenges
Adding to the Thunder's woes is the potential absence of Sam Konstas, who could get a call-up to Test duty. The club also expects internationals Sherfane Rutherford and Lockie Ferguson to leave mid-tournament for the ILT20.
“The incident with Cam Bancroft and Dan Sams was extremely unfortunate, but I'm really grateful for the opportunity I've been given,” said Christian. “I wish them all the best with their recoveries and hope to be back on the pitch soon.”
