Why Bruno Fernandes was 'upset' by Man Utd's improved performance at Liverpool

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes admitted he was “gutted” after Sunday's draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool, despite it being one of the under-fire side's best performances of the season.

United came into the game at Anfield on the back of a poor December in which they lost six of ten games in all competitions – including five of seven in the Premier League alone.

Considering Liverpool have set the standard at home and in Europe this season, having also won 3-0 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in September, most expected United's run to continue.

But Lisandro Martinez gave Ruben Amorim's side the lead in the second half. And as Liverpool then scored twice to go ahead, Amad Diallo equalised ask for a deserved point. It was further proof that unitedhaving also beaten Manchester City in recent weeks, they are capable of such performances, which in turn was a source of frustration for Fernandes due to his lack of consistency.

“I think it's a really good result,” said the midfielder SKY SPORTS.

“We could have won the game in the end. It's a fair result. I'm upset because if we show that against Liverpool why can't we do that every week? I finally had a decent performance overall. We we need a lot more from ourselves to get more out of this season.”

Looking ahead in light of the performance at Anfield, Fernandes revealed he is actually more “worried” about facing Southampton in the Premier League than Arsenal in the FA Cup.

“He was here, but he didn't come until today's match”, he reflected. “Now we have an FA Cup game against Arsenal which will be very difficult again. We want to be in that final again. I will probably worry more about Southampton after this performance (against Liverpool).

Amorim made similar comments after the final whistle, admitting that seeing United play the way they did at Anfield only made him “madder because of the other games”.
