Nwaneri has been sidelined for several weeks with the latest injury.

Midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has been ruled out for a few weeks ahead of Arsenal's EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle as injury concerns worsen.

Key player Bukayo Saka underwent surgery on his hamstring which will rule him out for a long period of time, while 17-year-old Nwaneri took his place on the right wing against Brighton at the weekend.

But he was replaced by Gabriel Martinelli after scoring at half-time.

“Unfortunately he has a muscle injury and will be out for a few weeks,” manager Mikel Arteta told reporters on Monday.

“He's stepped up and played for us and now he's started some big games and he's made an impact in the way he's played those games in different positions.

“So I'm heartbroken for him because the injury is going to stop him. But it's another step in the level of development he's at.”

Forward Raheem Sterling and defenders Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu remain sidelined and Kai Havertz, who has missed the north London side's last two games through illness, is a doubt for the home game against Newcastle.

“I hope (Havertz) comes back,” he said. “But I didn't want to say yes because last time I said he wasn't fit and healthy,” Arteta said.

When asked about defensive additions in the January transfer window, the Spaniard said, “What's going on in the market?” We are very careful. “Yes, but no.”

Arteta is Aston Villa; There was plenty of praise for Newcastle, who have won their last six games in all competitions, including surprise victories over Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

“They are a tough opponent. They have good individual players,” he said, noting the rich form of Alexander Isek, the Swede has scored 14 goals in 21 games for Newcastle, including seven in a row in the Premier League.

“He's definitely a top player. He is in top form. He scores a lot of goals. “

The second round will be held on February 5.
