Emery backs Potter to turn Hammers' season around

Graham Porter's arrival as West Ham boss has received a serious thumbs up from Aston Villa team-mate Unai Emery.

Potter was appointed on a two-and-a-half-year deal this morning, with his first game against West Ham in the FA Cup third round.

His arrival adds a twist to eighth-placed Villa's Premier League game against West Ham, who sit in 14th.

Emery hopes former Brighton and Chelsea boss Porter will boost the London club's fortunes.

He said: “West Ham have good players and a good team. It's not always good news when you change a manager, but now he has an opportunity and he will respect West Ham and Graham Porter, who he succeeded in managing in England. I think he will do well.”

Sad for the FA Cup for Emery.

Villa have enjoyed huge success under Emery but have provided few highlights in the FA Cup.

In his first season, his side stunned lower league Stevenage and last year lost to Chelsea in the fourth-tier replay at home.

Asked if he found such frustrations, the Spaniard replied: “The situation depends on the moment. We didn't win something in the FA Cup but it was a process. I don't think it's disappointing. It's a disappointment when you lose. But this is football.

“We are starting this year with the current conditions and tomorrow to be competitive and try to be better than the last two years. In order to overcome this competition, To try for a trophy and a selection. For Europe.”

Villa captain John McGinn will be sidelined tomorrow night as the Scotland international continues to struggle with the hamstring injury he picked up against Leicester at the weekend.
