A late flurry of second-half goals helped Chelsea eventually ease to a 5-0 home win over fourth-tier Morecambe in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
The perspective of an Almighty FA Cup upset briefly went from a distant possibility to a faint hope when Christopher Nkunku saved his penalty in the first half. Morecambe keeper Harry Burgoyne hadn't been tested much ahead of the tame spot-kick, instead watching Enzo Maresca's expensively assembled B side squander the many chances they created.
The Blues took a late lead on the eve of the first half thanks to Tosin Adarabioyo's long-range strike.
After a hard to convince first half, Maresca made three changes at the break, presenting in form Jadon SanchoMalo Gusto and Marc Cucurella. The Spanish defender – whose £55million transfer fee is roughly five times the value of the entire club Morecambe FC – burst into the box shortly after coming off the bench, cutting low for Renato Veiga to score . The Portuguese shot was saved, but it fell to Nkunku to score 2-0.
Morecambe, so defiant, so determined, so determined for the opening 70 minutes, were dismantled during a seven-minute burst. Tosin converted a second shot from outside the area earlier Joao Felix put on a brace of his own in just over 100 seconds. After converting a sharp counter-attack, the Elfin striker picked out the top corner for Chelsea's 27th effort of the afternoon.
The Blues emphatically sealed their place in tomorrow's fourth round draw as Morecambe return to the daily grind of relegation at the foot of England's professional football league.
