3 key battles that could decide the FA Cup tie

While the FA Cup third round is all about giant slaying and lower league success stories, Sunday's clash between Arsenal and Manchester United will undoubtedly attract more attention.

The historic rivals have faced off 16 times in the FA Cup's oldest competition and made it to the Premier League in early December. Arsenal were hosts on that occasion as well, beating Ruben Amorim's side 2-0 courtesy of some spot-kicks.

A confidence-boosting draw at Anfield last time out suggests Man Utd could make life more challenging for Arsenal on Sunday, with both sides likely to make changes ahead of midweek Premier League action.

Here are three key battles that could be decisive in north London.

Martin Odegaard

Arsenal will be without Bukayo Saka once again on Sunday and the winger's absence will undoubtedly have a big impact on the Gunners. They have lacked energy and creativity in recent games without their talismanic winger, with the creative burden falling solely on the shoulders of Martin Odegaard.

The Norwegian playmaker has been outstanding in recent weeks, however, struggling to operate at his usual standards. Only Saka has averaged more chances created than Odegaard in the Premier League this season, but the Arsenal captain has created just one chance in his last three games.

It will be Manuel Ugarte's main responsibility to stifle Odegaard at the Emirates Stadium and the Uruguayan is beginning to find his feet under old ally Amorim. No player made more tackles than the summer signing at Anfield last Sunday and his combative approach will be vital in denying Arsenal's more creative influence.

Amad Diallo

Amad Diallo has often been a game changer Man Utd this season. During a campaign of mediocrity, ivory, who just signed a new long-term deal with the clubhas often been the only shining light for the Red Devils.

Amad once again proved to be the man for the big occasion last weekend, scoring the equalizer against Liverpool, breaking the Reds' hearts last season in this competition with a dramatic late winner in a 4-3 duel. Arsenal will be wary of his penchant for winning moments.

Whether Amad starts in right midfield or right center forward remains to be seen, but Riccardo Calafiori is likely to be his opponent. The Italian is an energetic and courageous defender who is unlikely to leave Man Utd's number 16. This will make for an interesting battle and one that could be decisive.

Calafiori, who was an unused substitute during his time at Arsenal Midweek loss in the Carabao Cupcurrently leads the Gunners in successful strikes for 90 in the Premier League. He will need to time his tackles expertly against Man Utd live stream.

Gabriel Jesus

Gabriel Jesus showed the impact of confidence for a centre-forward as 2024 ends. After finding the net just once between February and November, the Brazilian went on to score six in four games, most recently netting in New Year's Day v Brentford.

The former Manchester City striker has always been a player in stripes and currently finds himself in a purple, something Mikel Arteta should take advantage of on Sunday. He will relish his chances to add a single goal against the Red Devils in the past 14 meetings.

Harry Maguire is likely to be the centre-half who will line up directly with Jesus, with the Man Utd defender sitting in the middle of the back three. He showed incredible leadership and tenacity at Anfield last weekend to frustrate the Premier League's most potent attack, even if he subsequently unloaded a player on the dying embers.

Jesus' guile and agility should, on paper at least, cause problems for Maguire, but the extra protection afforded the England international as part of a back three could see him dominate another tightly contested duel.
