Barcelona won their first trophy of the season on Sunday night, cruising to a 5-2 victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.
A barely believable first half was punished with yellow cards by both teams. Real MadridKylian Mbappe broke the deadlock with a superb individual goal after just five minutes. However, by the time Alejandro Balde finished off a header in the final ten minutes of the first half, Barcelona led 4-1.
Lamine Yamal's pinpoint strike into the far corner after 22 minutes canceled out Mbappe's early goal. Robert Lewandowski fired Barcelona ahead with a penalty in the 36th minute, just before Raphinha headed the Catalans into a 3-1 lead.
It took the Brazilian just three minutes into the second half to score Barcelonait's the fifth of an evening to enjoy. Bursting behind Madrid's reshuffled back line, Raphinha had already beaten Aurelien Tchouameni but found time to get past the makeshift centre-back to have some fun before picking out the bottom corner.
Madrid, as they have often proved, would not go down lightly on that good night. Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for a foul on Mbappe just before the hour mark. From that free kick, Rodrygo found the top corner to make it 2-5.
Barcelona's ten men stood their ground, trying to lift the first title of Hansi Flick's tenure, while Madrid were left to lick their wounds.
