Shubman Gill trolled and attacked by Adam Gilchrist, Michael Vaughan

Legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist launched a scathing attack on young Indian talent Shubman Gill for his disappointing performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Gilchrist also took a brutal dig at Gill for focusing more on haircuts than on-field performances. Former England batsman Michael Vaughan he was also unhappy with Gill's performances and questioned his consistency with the bat.

Shubman Gill has not been at his best all year series against Australia. His footwork was questionable and his technique was easily exposed by the world-class Australian bowling attack.

Adam Gilchrist on playing Shubman Gill

While speaking on 'Club Prairie Fire' YouTube channel, Adam Gilchrist was asked about Shubman Gill's performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gilchrist gave only 4 out of 10 points to Gill, while also attempting the haircut.

“I was going to give (Shubman Gill) a three maybe, but I'd give him a 4/10 because I think he knows the world cricketer has better hair when he takes his helmet off. As soon as that helmet comes off it's … it's perfect,” Gilchrist said.

Shubman Gill is seen as a future batting star of Indian cricket after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He is also set to be India's future captain for the next few years and has also led the team in a couple of T20Is.

“He frustrates me” – Michael Vaughan on Shubman Gill

On the same show, Michael Vaughan was also asked about Shubman Gill's under-par performance in the Test series against Australia. Vaughan claimed he was frustrated by Gill's poor batting performances and felt he had to justify his elegance and talent.

“4/10 (When asked for his score) he (Shubman Gill) frustrates me. He needs to get higher scores. He's such a lovely, classy one as we call him,” Vaughan said.

Shubman Gill has one of the most elegant drives in the game among the current crop of cricketers. Although his footwork is minimal, he has excellent hand-eye coordination, which allows him to play some sharp shots comfortably.

Shubman Gill in BGT 2024-25

Shubman Gill played 32 Tests and scored 1993 runs at an average of 35.05 with 5 hundreds and 7 fifties. His alarming numbers have raised questions about his selection in the team.

In the 2024–25 BGT, Gill scored 93 runs in three Tests at an average of 18.60 while batting at the crucial No. 3 spot. He missed the first Test due to an injury he picked up before the series of tests. Whether or not the 25-year-old plays in India's tour of England in June remains to be seen.

Gill scored a match winning 91 in the Gabba Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 and helped India win a historic game. But since 110 against Bangladesh in December 2022, he has not scored a fifty at home in 16 innings.
